Canon has announced the launch of the 12x optical zoom, 8MP PowerShot S5 IS. The new compact inherits optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, professional-grade optics and extensive movie functions from previous S-series cameras while introducing a host of new features designed to increase the photographer's success rate.

The Powershot S5 IS is loaded with many of Canon’s latest advanced technologies including the DIGIC III Image Processor, so both still images and movies are rendered with fine detail and luminous clarity. A built-in hot shoe adapter allows photographers to attach Canon Speedlite EX Series external flashes for greater flexibility in low light situations. The killer feature missed by most reviewers is the large 2.5-inch swivel type LCD monitor with 207K pixel resolution. The swivel LCD screen is long gone from the Canon G-series.

Creative Light Effects

A new special scene mode called “Creative Light Effects” brings more fun capturing night scenes. You can select an effect before shooting, then it transforms background bright spots to stars, hearts, music notes and more.

Movie Mode

Select from VGA (640 x 480 pixels) and QVGA (320 x 240 pixels), with frame rates of 30 fps and 15 fps for recording up to 1 hour or 4GB.

Fast Frame Rate (QVGA; 320 x 240 pixels) recording at 60 fps for up to 1 minute, Compact Movie Mode (QQVGA; 160 x 120 pixels) recording at 15 fps for up to 3 minutes, and Time Lapse (640 x 480) recording at 1 or 2 sec. intervals.
