The Gmail file size limit per email has just been increased to 20MB. Gmail is a quick way for photographers to send medium-size files (TIFFs, zips, etc.) assuming the recipient has either a Gmail account or a mail server that allows 20MB email attachments.

What about files even larger than 20MB? Try Gspace. This Firefox extension allows you to use the Gmail space limit (2.8GB 3.2GB and growing) for file storage. It acts as an online drive, so you can upload files from your hard drive and access them from any internet ready system. The author recommends creating a new Gmail account so that your regular account is not affected. Read the other gotchas.

Another option is the YouSendIt service. The free version supports transfers of files up to 100MB in size. Premium accounts can transfer files as large as 2GB in size. Plugins are available for both Adobe Photoshop CS2/CS3 and Apple Aperture.

Of course, photographers working for large agencies have their own dedicated FTP service. However, FTP clients might not always be accessible while traveling.
